Best Covid-19 Protection Face Masks And Face Shields

How Do The Different Types Of Face Masks Work?

Medical masks:

Also called surgical masks, they are loose disposable masks. They are intended to protect the user from contact with droplets and aerosols that may contain germs. A medical mask also filters large particles into the air when the wearer inhales. To make medical masks better fit the shape, knot the earmuffs where they attach to the mask. Then bend and tuck the unnecessary material under the edges..

N95 masks:

An N95 mask is a type of respirator. It offers more protection than a medical mask because it filters out large and small particles when the wearer inhales. The general public can use non-surgical N95s when supplies are available. Health care providers must be trained and pass an adjustment test before wearing an N95 surgical mask. Like surgical masks, N95 masks are meant to be disposable. However, researchers are testing ways to disinfect and reuse them.

Some N95 masks, and even some cloth masks, have valves that make breathing easier. Unfortunately, these masks do not filter the air that the wearer exhales. For this reason, they have been banned in some places.

Cloth masks:

A cloth mask is designed to trap respiratory droplets that are released when the wearer speaks, coughs or sneezes. It also acts as a barrier to protect the user from inhaling droplets released by others.

The most effective fabric masks are made from multiple layers of tight woven fabric like cotton. A layered mask will prevent more drops from passing through or escaping the mask.

How to get the most from your Face mask:

The effectiveness of cloth and medical masks can be improved by ensuring that the masks are well fitted to the contours of your face to prevent leakage of air around the masks' edges.

Masks should be snug over the nose, mouth and chin, with no gaps. You should feel warm air coming through the front of the mask when you breathe out. You shouldn't feel air coming out under the edges of the mask.

Masks that have a flexible nasal strip help prevent air from escaping through the top of the mask.

Some people choose to wear a disposable mask under the cloth mask. In that case, the cloth mask should press the edges of the disposable mask against the face. Do not add layers if they make breathing difficult or obstruct vision.

Proper use, storage, and cleaning of masks also affect how well they protect you. Follow these steps to put on and take off your mask:

  • Wash or disinfect your hands before and after putting on the mask.

  • Place the mask over your mouth, nose, and chin.

  • Tie it behind your head or use ear hooks. Make sure it's tight.

  • Do not touch your mask while wearing it.

  • If you accidentally touch your mask, wash or disinfect your hands.

  • If your mask gets wet or dirty, switch to a clean one. Place the used mask in a sealable bag until you can dispose of it or wash it.

  • Remove the mask by untying it or lifting the earmuffs without touching the front of the mask or your face.

  • Wash your hands immediately after removing your mask.

  • Regularly wash cloth masks in the washing machine or by hand. (They can be washed together with other garments.)

And don't forget these precautions:

  • Do not put masks on anyone who has trouble breathing or is unconscious or cannot remove the mask without assistance.

  • Do not wear masks on children under 2 years old.

  • Do not wear face masks as a substitute for physical distancing.

What about face shields?

It may not be possible to wear a face mask in all situations. If you must wear a face shield instead of a mask, choose one that covers the sides of your face and extends under your chin.

Do you still need to wear a facemask after you’re fully vaccinated?

Once you are fully vaccinated, you can return to activities that you may not have been able to do more safely due to the pandemic. However, if you are in an area with a large number of new COVID-19 cases, we recommend wearing a mask in public and outdoor places in crowded areas or when in close contact with unvaccinated people.
